Surgical Technology Program Requirements

The Surgical Technology Program reserves the right to make changes to the admissions criteria at any time it deems necessary.

In addition to the standard Texas State Technical College Admission’s Office requirements for acceptance into the College, students planning to enroll in the Surgical Technology Program and take Surgical Technology program courses must complete the following requirements.

  • Personal InterviewA Surgical Technology Department application including copies of high school transcripts, college transcripts if applicable, GED scores, and TSI scores. This application should be received at the Eddie Lucio Health Science Technology Building at least three (3) months prior to the anticipated start date of the program.
  • A personal interview with the surgical technology program chairperson or designated faculty in the S.T. Department.
  • Must attend a information session held the third(3) Thursday of each month except March and  December at the Eddie Lucio Building Room 128. 
  • Must be THEA/ACCUPLACER complete

Selection Criteria

Selections are made according to results of interview and the evaluation of high school and/or college transcripts,aptituded test,background check, drug screen test, GPA  and THEA Scores (Must pass all sections of THEA/ACCPLACER test).

  • The application will be reviewed by the program Admissions Committee for completeness of application, and general academic courses taken.
  • APTITUDE TEST (HOBET)
  • CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK 
  • DRUG SCREEN TEST DONE PRIOR TO ACCEPTANCE 
  • Completion of Hepatitis A and B vaccines(takes 6 months to complete) 
  • Students will be placed in rank order according to grade point average of courses taken, TSI scores,Aptitude test, and background check. If there are equal grade point averages, the interview date on the application will be used to establish ranking. (All factors being equal those applying first will be accepted.)

Applicant Status

Following review of all applications to the program by the admissions committee, applicants will be placed into one of three categories summarized below.

  •  Accepted for enrollment.

Applicant will be notified by mail or will be contacted by telephone.

  • Not accepted but placed on waiting list.
  • If openings arise in the program before the first class day, students on the waiting list may be eligible for enrollment based on ranking.
  • If the applicant is not able to register by the first class day, the applicant must reapply for the next starting class.
  • Applicant not accepted. - Applicant will be notified by mail.

The Surgical Technology Program accepts 20 students per class.

Surgical Technology Program Re-Admission Policy

Students must complete and submit a readmission application to the Program Chairman to be considered for re-admission. This application must be submitted at least three (3) months in advance of the starting date.

A student will only be allowed re-admission into the Surgical Technology Program once. If a student is not successful after being re-admitted into the program, a five (5) year waiting period
