POLICY

It is the policy of Texas State Technical College to use a standard method for calculating student grade point averages.

PERTINENT INFORMATION

There is no method externally imposed on TSTC for calculation of grade point averages, but the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools specifies that an institution “must publish its grading policies and its grading practices must be consistent with policy.”

“GPA” is the abbreviation used to designate “Grade Point Average.”

PROCEDURES

    1. Student’s Cumulative Grade Pont Average (CGPA) is calculated as follows:

      1. Grade points earned for all courses taken with grades recorded as A, B, C, D and F, except developmental education courses, are determined by multiplying the number of points for each grade recorded by the number of credit hours assigned to each course.

      2. Grade points calculated in Step A are summed.

      3. Credit hours are summed for those courses counted in Step A.

      4. The summed grade points from Step B are divided by the summed credit hours from Step C. The quotient is carried to two decimal points and rounded to the nearest one-hundredth of a point.

    2. A student’s Term Grade Point Average (TGPA) is calculated in the same manner as the Cumulative Grade Point Average except that only courses from each term are included in the calculation.

    3. A student’s Program Grade Point Average (PGPA) is calculated in the same manner as the Cumulative Grade Point Average except that only courses applicable to the student’s current program are counted in the calculation. Such courses may include academic courses, technical support courses and technical courses.

    4. A student’s Standards of Progress Term Grade Point Average (SOPTGPA) is calculated in the same manner as the Term Grade Point Average except that developmental education courses are included in the calculation.

    5. A student’s Standards of Progress Cumulative Grade Point Average (SOPCGPA) is calculated in the same manner as the Cumulative Grade Point Average except that developmental education courses are included in the calculation.

    6. Transcripts reflect all course work taken, the student’s Cumulative GPA, and Term GPA. The Program GPA will be reflected on the transcript as part of the program completion information.

Students who have changed program (major) have their Program GPA revised to reflect only grades from courses in the new degree plan.
