Public Safety Aide Program

What is the Public Safety Aide Program?

The Public Safety Aide Program is a TSTC Student Work Study oriented program that assists the TSTC Police Department in managing the TSTC Parking and Traffic Enforcement, perform clerical duties, assist TSTC Students Faculty and Staff with vehicle assistance, and Crime Prevention procedures.

Who sponsors the Public Safety Aide Personnel?

The TSTC Police Public Safety Aide Program is a program within the TSTC Financial Aid Department which is a part of the TSTC Student Services Division. The TSTC Financial Aid Department works closely with the TSTC Police Office in providing student workers that desire to work within the TSTC Police Department.

Who can be a "Public Safety Aide"?

All eligible students who wish to become a TSTC Public Safety Aide (PSA) shall make known their intentions or requests to the TSTC Financial Aid Department, complete all TSTC Financial Aid Applications and request interest in this TSTC Police Department program. Certain guidelines must be met to participate in this program that has been set forth by the TSTC Police Department and the TSTC Financial Aid Department. View each PSA’s bio’s.

What are the Guidelines or Qualifications?

  1. All PSA’s must be 18 years of age or older and be capable of performing certain required duties.
  2. Shall have or carry a 2.0 gpa while participating in the program.
  3. Pass a personnel background check. This means that a candidate for a PSA position shall not have a felony conviction, a pending criminal case or criminal record of a criminal misdemeanor.
  4. Eligible students who wish to participate must pass a motor vehicle traffic check. Driver license check shall not relate that the student has a revocation of driver license and that the student is not a continuos violator.

What are the duties to be performed?

  • Be able to operate a TSTC Police Handheld Radio in a professional and appropriate manner.
  • Meet and greet all students, faculty and staff  in a  professional and helpful manner.
  • Assist students, faculty and staff with vehicle boost that will not place PSA, Student, Faculty or Staff in a dangerous position
  • Operate (with training) a handheld citation computer.
  • Issue TSTC parking citations in a fair, equal and professional manner.
  • Learn certain basic filing procedures.

Is there training involved?

Yes! There is a mandatory 20 hours of training that takes in all duties to be performed and other areas of concern. These hours of training are included within the amount of hours granted by the TSTC Financial Aid Department.

Under what authority do the PSA’S operate?

Each PSA will work under the command of the TSTC Chief of Public Safety or his designee and the authority to issue citations is granted through that office.

Do the PSA’S wear any type of uniform?

Yes! Each PSA is issue a collared pull over shirt that identifies the student as a PSA and all belt gear for keys, radio and ticket holders.

Each PSA is responsible for the equipment and the cleanness of the issued equipment.

What are the work hours of a PSA?

The position of PSA is secondary to the students class work or schedule. The work schedule is determined by the course schedule.

Who do the PSA's answer to?

Technically all PSA’s answer directly to the TSTC Chief of Public Safety or his designee. While on duty in the office or field, the PSA’s answer to the TSTC Police Investigator. If problems or questions arise the PSA’s may be assisted by any TSTC Police personnel.

PSA’s will never be left unsupervised.
