Test-Taking Tips and Hints

Studying can help you achieve your goals -- the more you know the more you can do.  Good study skills can help you succeed!

Study and Test-taking Skills

  • Your attitude about studying is important -
Think positively, keep your goals in mind and use your time wisely.

  • Keep a planning notebook - Help balance your schedule because your time is valuable.

  • Make studying your job - Keep regular study hours and pick a time that is best for you.

  • Be comfortable when studying - Face away from windows, clear off the top of your desk or worktable.

  • Taking notes is an important key to success - It is important not to write everything down, listen for key words, and listen for clues such as " the 4 causes were" or "to sum up."

  • When taking notes from books - Get the 'big picture" by reading the summary.

  • Sit near the front of the room - It is less distracting.

  • Learning how to study - It can help make you a better student.  Many skills that make you a success in school can also help you succeed on the job.

  • Study with others in your class - Join or form a study group.  For example, you can share notes, ask each other questions and work out problems as a group.

Tips for Taking a Test

  • Before you take the test - Consider it a contest (you vs. the test-taker), try to guess the questions, review your notes, outlines, note cards, quizzes, etc. and look up points that are not clear.
  • During the test - Relax and forget about other people, read directions carefully and look over the whole test first.
  • After the test - When the test is returned, read any comments carefully so you understand any mistakes you made.  Talk with your instructor if you have any questions.

Other Helpful Hints

  • If you feel bogged down when studying, take a short break to stretch or take a walk (get a drink of water) etc.  When you return, review your notes to get a fresh start on your subject.
  • Keep yourself in good shape both physically and mentally.  Get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly, eat healthy food and keep your vision sharp.
