Mentoring at TSTC
What is Mentoring?
A matter of trust. Mentoring is a structured and trusting relationship that brings people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the mentee. A mentor is someone who, along with family, provides a person with support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement and constructive example. Mentors are good listeners, people who care, people who want to help people bring out strengths that are already there. A mentor is not a foster parent, therapist, parole officer, or cool peer. *
There are many mentoring programs on TSTC they range from mentoring first year students on our TSTC campus to travelling to local middle schools to mentor groups of young students. The mentoring programs on TSTC are:
· Access to Success: Career Discovery Through Mentoring
o This program was created for local middle school students to explore information about a technical education and careers.
· i.know Initiative
o Bridges the gap between students and available resources on and off campus by constant training, updating information and personally mentoring students during their tenure at TSTC Harlingen.
· H.A.T.T.S.
o Provides academic support for students that are on academic probation at TSTC Harlingen. This program aims to improve academic standing through mentoring.
· Mentors at the Academic Achievement Center
o The mentors in the academic achievement center are available to help students who are struggling with adjusting to college life or students that are just in need of someone to talk to.
ALL of the mentoring services offered on campus are FREE!!!!!!
