Welcome Letter
Welcome to the Medical Information Specialist/Transcriptionist department. Medical specialists are individuals who work in clerical and billing areas of medical facilities, while medical transcriptionists are medical language specialists who interpret and transcribe reports dictated by physicians and other health care professionals. These reports are the communication tools for documenting health care and facilitating health care delivery. This is the ideal profession for individuals who are interested in working in the medical field yet do not want to work directly in patient care.
Graduates of this program are prepared to work in a variety of facilities, such as hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, or even at home. These graduates are trained for various positions including, but not limited to, the following: assembly clerk, analysis clerk, coder, file clerk, release of information clerk, processing specialist, unit secretary, medical receptionist, billing specialist, appointments scheduler, medical transcriptionist assistant, and medical transcriptionist. Skills are practiced in health care facilities during one directed practice course.
More details about the MIS/T program are available through the College Information Office, and you are welcome to visit our facilities by scheduling a tour. The Department Chair, Deborah Woods, and program faculty and staff work with students individually to plan a career path and course schedules.
