Pop Culture Wars is an event sponsored by the LRC and Student Success, it's main purpose is to raise awareness (and donations) for the Harlingen Humane Society and apply critical thinking skills while having fun. Students and staff competing will have a chance to win prizes and to learn more about Popular Culture and statistics from the Humane Society.
Day 1. 2/20/08 The Battle begins! The participants answered questions from categories such as Movie Quotes, T.V. and Comics. Some of the prizes given out included DVD's, CD's, Posters and even a Lucha Libre mask! The winners were Sarah Maldonado and Jessica Ortiz, they advance to the final to be held on 2/27 in the LRC Orientation Room. Congratulations!
Day 2. 2/21/08. The Saga Continues... The competition was really tight. Team's 1 and 3 tied and everything was decided in a sudden death question. The winners of the day were: Alejandro Espinoza alongside crazy Canadians Remington, and Jackson.
Day 3. 2/27/08. The FINAL battle... Today history was made in the Orientation Room. The first ever POP CULTURE WARS CHAMPIONSHIP final was held at noon. The Pop Culture Guru's are: Jackson and Remington from the Dental Hygiene Program. The Canadian friends will have bragging rights until the next event. The champions received a Pop Culture Trivial Pursuit Game, hours of free pool, hours at the Flight Simulator, free color copies at the LRC, shirts, a lucha libre mask, DVD's, Music, and more.
The LRC, Student Success, and the Harlingen Humane Society would like to thank everyone involved in the PCW. We hope to make this a bigger event in the future and to make this possible we will need your support and the involvement of more people like you. Practicing critical thinking, having fun and helping a noble cause is the purpose of events like these.
