The Dr. J. Gilbert Leal Learning Resource Center is located on the north side of the TSTC campus, parallel to Loop 499, next to the Student Center.

Responsible Use of Computing Systems
 

The Learning Resource Center provides computing services and resources for faculty, staff and students. The services are provided to support the educational, research and mission of the college. It is the responsibility of each individual faculty, staff and student to ensure that these services are used in a responsible manner and in the spirit of the mission of the institution. It is also the responsibility of each individual to act in accordance with the college "Acceptable Use of Computer Resources" and State policies and guidelines concerning obscene materials and use of computer games . In summary, it is against state and college policy to facilitate use of obscene or lewd materials as well as use of computerized games. In accordance with its mission, the Library will follow TSTC Harlingen policy regarding censorship of materials, including websites.

TSTC has developed clear guidelines and policies for responsible computer use in the library:

  • Computer use is limited to TSTC students & staff.  Students must be prepared to present valid TSTC ID card for access to computer resources.

     
  • Computers require user to enter a valid username and password combination. Every user should not share login credentials with other people. Unauthorized computer access is prohibited.

     
  • Public display of explicit adult images will be regarded as Sexual Harassment by students or staff.

     
  • In order to properly shut down the computer lab, the computers will shut down 10 minutes before closing time.

     
  • Please use your time efficiently.  Time limits will be imposed during peak usage hours.  Researchers will be given priority over recreational users.

     
  • No Eating or Drinking inside the library.

     
  • Certain software is incompatible with the programs available on these computers.  Software installation is only allowed with the knowledge and assistance of library staff.

     
  • Library staff will be happy to answer specific questions and assist with research.  Users are responsible for understanding how to run software programs.

     
  • Certain computers have priority for students in specific technical programs.

     
  • This is a College library.  Children are not permitted to use these computers.

     

As a state institution, the Texas State Technical College Library will enforce all policies in a responsible fashion including informing any individual of inappropriate use. Any willful and continued misuse of computer services will be considered a violation of college policies and will be handled according to the college's Standards of Conduct guidelines as described in the policy websites cited above.

College policy expressly limit use of its computing equipment by individuals not affiliated with the college except under circumstances considered public service. In this context, individuals not associated with the college may use the Library's public terminals as guests of the Library to search the Library's catalog for materials and online databases for  information. Use of these reference computers for general purpose activities such as using Microsoft Office software applications is not permissible.
