Welcome Letter

Thank you for your interest in TSTC’s Health Information Technology program, which is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education in cooperation with the Council on Education of AHIMA, the American Health Information Management Association.

The health information management profession focuses on health care data and the management of health care information resources. TSTC’s HIT students learn skills in both classroom and laboratory settings. Skills are practiced in health care facilities during two directed practice courses.

Graduates of this program are prepared to work in a variety of facilities, such as hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, managed care organizations, long term care facilities, behavioral health facilities, ambulatory care facilities, and rehabilitation centers. They are trained in numerous areas such as medical coding, utilization management, medical statistics, release of information, health record analysis, quality assurance abstracting, and health record consulting.

Upon graduation of the six-semester program, students are awarded an Associate of Applied Science Degree. Graduates may take the National Certification Examination to become a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).

More details about the HIT program are available through the College Information Office, and you are welcome to visit our facilities by scheduling a tour. The Department Chair, Deborah Woods, and program faculty and staff work with students individually to plan a career path and course schedules. For more information, call 800.852.8784, extension 4768, or 956.364.4768.
