Career Outlook

A career as a health information technician (HIT) professional is as rewarding as it is gratifying. As healthcare advances, the HIT professional provides the necessary skills required to successfully navigate the changes in the managment of patient data.

The HIT career path encompasses a wide range of occupations with various job functions including, but not limited to, the following:  health records management, quality assurance, risk management, medical coding, data analysis and reporting.

Employment of Health Information Technicians is expected to grow much faster than the average through 2012, due to rapid growth in the number of aging baby boomers as well as advancement in medical tests, treatments, and procedures that will be increasingly scrutinized by third-party payers, regulators, courts, and consumers.

The starting salary for entry-level positions depends on the area of specialization, with coders earning at the higher end of the scale. Starting salaries in the Valley range from $21,000 - $30,000. Out of the Valley starting salaries may range anywhere from $25,000 - $50,000. Starting salaries increase for those individuals with Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credentials.
