Sigma Kappa Delta

The National English Honor Society
for two year colleges

What is Sigma Kappa Delta?

Sigma Kappa Delta is The National English Honor Society for students in two-year colleges.  Its purposes are to

  • recognize and reward outstanding achievement in English language and literature;

  • provide cultural stimulation and promote interest in English on two-year college campuses and in the communities they serve;

  • foster English in all its aspects, including creative and critical writing;

  • promote good professional interaction among members; and

  • exhibit high standards of academic achievement.

What are the membership requirements?

Two-year colleges offering an associate degree and who are credited by the appropriate national or regional accrediting agencies may petition to charter a chapter.

Membership is available to all English faculty members and to those students who

  1. are currently enrolled in a college which has established a Sigma Kappa Delta chapter;

  2. have completed a minimum of one college English language (composition) or literature course with a "B" average or better;

  3. have completed at least 12 semester hours or the equivalent quarter-hours of college credit;

  4. have a minimum 3.4 gpa; and

  5. are ranked in the highest 30% of their class in general scholarship.

What are the advantages of Sigma Kappa Delta membership?

Membership gives students in two-year colleges the opportunity to

  • receive life-long recognition for academic excellence;

  • qualify for scholarships sponsored by Sigma Kappa Delta;

  • attend and participate in regional and national conferences;

  • learn more about professional and educational choices in the field;

  • participate in fun(d) projects with other members of  SKD;

  • participate in college and community service;

  • meet other outstanding scholars and professionals in the disciplines of English and creative writing;

  • acquire leadership skills;

  • become part of a nationwide network of students interested in writing and literature.

How much does membership cost?

Each individual member pays a one-time membership fee of $30.  This fee establishes lifetime membership with Sigma Kappa Delta.

 

 

Instructor teaching
