News Headlines

Hey, Mister. Can You Spare a Can of Food?
Today is the last day of a canned food donation drive sponsored by the Staff Senate that will benefit needy families and individuals. Please place donations in marked boxes located in each building. Suggested items include corn, green beans, peas and cranberry sauce. Plus, boxed items such as stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn bread mix and gravy mix would be delicious. Excellence Awards Nominations Deadline
Nominations for the Staff Excellence Award and the Excellence in Teaching Award will be accepted through Tuesday, November 17. To go online and nominate, please click on the https://secure.harlingen.tstc.edu/ExcellenceAwards link or paste it into your browser window.

For Staff Excellence, you could nominate three individuals (one exempt and two non-exempts). For the Excellence in Teaching Award, you will need to nominate one academic/developmental faculty member and one major program faculty member. Voters must submit a comment about nominees. Conform. Join the Wellness Walk Craze
Grab the sneakers and expand your social network while promoting a healthy lifestyle. Registration at the Athletic Field will start at 5 PM prior to the Wellness Walk on the track around the Athletic Field. The walk will commence at 5:30 PM. No admission fee; there will be prizes. Movie on the Lawn
Hang onto your CineMark passes. There’s free admission for “Movie on the Lawn,” which is set for the Athletic Field at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 18. You might want to leave your little brother or sister at home because some parts of the movie – “The Hangover is rated “R.” – might not be suitable for minors. Battle of the Bands
Critics already are raving about one of the most sensational entertainment gigs to hit TSTC! Get funky at Battle of the Bands in the Student Quad Area from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. midnight Thursday, November 19. The AliCat Project will be the headliner; plus, there will be Lucid Decree, Bionicore, CANE, Immortal Guardian, The Shrimp Shack Shooters, Seven, Blu Pilosky and Adrenochrome. Admission is totally awesome: Bring one non-perishable canned food item per person or a donation of $2 per person that will go to the RGV Food Bank. How cheap is that? The Vibe Sponsors Silent Auction
The Vibe (formerly known as the Communication Club) will sponsor a silent auction in the Cafeteria from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, November 19. There will be a wide variety of items to bid on that could become fantastic Christmas gifts! Support the club and bid because it’s a fund-raiser and community service event. Learning to Lead: Leadership Styles
Please register in advance online at https://secure.harlingen.tstc.edu/Workshop/ for the workshop from 12 PM to 1 PM Thursday. Discussion will focus on the importance of leadership qualities and implementation of various leadership styles. Lunch provided only for registered students, who will practice leadership styles through a critical thinking activity. Presenters will be Communications Instructor Julie H. CET Brisket Plate Fund-raiser
The Chemical-Environmental Technology Club is selling brisket plates for $6. Get one-half pound of brisket with charro beans, rice, bread, jalapeño AND BEVERAGE! Tickets are on sale from CET Club members or at the CET office in the CET Building (i.e., Building J). Pick up the plates at the TSTC Wellness & Sports Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. November 21. Extra plates may be available for sale during the pickup time. Proceeds fund the annual field trip for students to tour businesses. Toys for TSTC Tots
Toys for TSTC Tots Committee members are selling $1 raffle tickets as a fund-raiser. The winner will receive a turkey dinner with all the trimmings that feeds six to eight people; the drawing will be November 23. The committee also is seeking individuals to sponsor gifts for children of families that reside in student housing. The gifts should cost about $10 and are due December 1.
