News Headlines

Let ‘The Games’ Begin!
The SGA Club Olympics will be held in the Student Quad from 11:30 AM-1 PM today (March 8) and Tuesday. Sign-up each day will be from 11:30 AM to 12 PM and competitions will start at noon; no late entries will be accepted. Events today will include bat spin and tug of war. The brain bowl and balloon pop are scheduled for Tuesday. Winners will be announced Wednesday during the Spring Break Hookup and first place for total points will receive the highly coveted Club Olympics Championship Trophy. Sobering Exhibit
The Amber Menefee Memorial Trailer will be in the Student Quad Area – the parking lot between Building S and Building G – from 1 PM to 5 PM March 8 (today). For information online about how a drunk driver ended Amber’s life go to http://www.ambersmobilememorial.org/.  Students and employees are welcome to visit the memorial trailer; there is no admission fee.

Spring Break Conference
Special speakers and discussion about timely Spring Break topics will be at the Spring Break Conference in the auditorium of the state Rep. Irma Rangel Science & Technology Building from 9 AM to 12 PM Wednesday, March 10. The agenda includes 9 AM, Welcome; 9:10 AM, “Dangers of Spring Break in Mexico,” Cameron County Sheriff’s Lt. Robert Rodriguez; 10:10 AM, “Date Rape,” Veronica Casas of Harlingen Family Crisis Center, and 11:10 AM, “Dangers of Drinking & Driving,” Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Johnny Hernandez. Car Safety Seat Inspections
Free inspections of car safety seats will be conducted in the Student Housing Area in the parking lot along Dogwood Street by the Harlingen Police Department from 3 PM to 5 PM March 10. Make sure little ones ride safely in properly installed car seats! Phone 956.364.4520 for details.

The Placement / Cooperative Education Office will sponsor a job fair for TSTC students and TSTC graduates from 9 AM to 1 PM March 11 in the TSTC Cultural Arts Center. Meet University Admissions Advisors
The Office of Student Success in Building D will have admissions advisors from the University of Texas at Brownsville and the University of Phoenix (yes, the online courses advertised on television) in the office to meet with students from 9:30 AM to 3 PM March 11. A teleconference hookup with admissions advisors at the University of Texas-Pan American and the University of Texas-San Antonio will be held at the same location on the same date and times. Environmental Action & Education

Registration Information Advisory
TSTC will publish a small booklet – available starting March 29 – with deadlines and important information about course registration for Spring Semester 2010 and Fall Semester 2010. Registration for summer and fall will start Monday, March 29. The summer course schedule is posted online at www.harlingen.tstc.edu/courses and fall courses will be posted March 29. The course schedule “book” with the complete list of courses will be available online only. Contact your advisor or faculty for details.

SkillsUSA Earns State Medals
TSTC Harlingen students scored impressive results at the state SkillsUSA competition. Pedro Montanez and Jose Saldierna were elected as state officers for 2011. Gold medalists included Roman Hinojosa, auto refinishing technology; Edward Almanza, T-shirt category; Eli Espinoza, carpentry, and Raul Torres, masonry. Silver medals went to Ismael Villarreal, collision repair; Allen De La Cruz, Internet networking; Auto Collision students, opening and closing ceremony, and Crystal Wright, architectural drafting. Roy Espinoza brought home a bronze medal for architectural drafting.

‘Change for Haiti’ Helps Survivors
Students will donate $1,317 to Doctors Without Borders thanks to the “Change for Haiti” fundraiser. Student Government Association officers collected $939 and the combined efforts of CSMT, Dental Explorers, RPGS and Intramural clubs raised $378. The CSMT Club earned a lunch party for bringing in $205 alone.

Commit to Fitness
A workshop from 12 PM to 1 PM March 10 will show students fitness routines and the importance of documenting daily exercise activities. Students will be able to create / design a fitness plan. Share Your Creativity
Students are encouraged to submit creative writing, reviews, artwork, photography, recipes and club information to the Photojournalism & Design Club for publication in the Mustang Magazine. Be on the lookout for the magazine’s newest feature, “Advice Ally”! Submission deadline for the April issue is Wednesday, March 17. Express Your ‘Insight’
The Insight Poetry Contest will accept poems through Wednesday, March 24. Prizes are $100 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place; plus, winning poems will be published in Mustang Magazine. File 2010 Financial Aid Applications Early
Students should renew financial aid applications for Fall Semester 2010. The 2010-2011 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available. New and existing students should apply for financial aid immediately after completing 2009 federal income tax forms. New FAFSA URL: www.fafsa.gov. Contact the Financial Aid Office at 364.3330 for details. Remember that scholarships and certain programs require early applications.

Graduation Cap & Gown Orders
The Bookstore is taking prepaid graduation cap and gown orders. The deadline to request and prepay at the Bookstore is March 26. Sets include the cap, gown and tassel for $25. Personalized graduation announcements also may be purchased at the Bookstore. Orders for graduation announcements may be made starting March 29 and orders must be placed no later than April 27. Invitations are sold in packages of five for $5. Graduation announcement orders may be picked up three days from the date the order is placed. Phone 956.364.4446 for details.

Logo Design Competition
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges is sponsoring a logo design competition for students, faculty, staff, alumni and retirees of member institutions.
