The education of the dental hygienist emphasizes the basic sciences and development of clinical skills needed to provide preventive dental care to the public. Dental Hygiene students at TSTC Harlingen are able to fulfill their clinical experiences at a beautiful state-of-the-art dental clinic on campus. The students utilize the 13 chair clinic to receive over 700 hours of instruction in a 1 faculty to 5 student ratio. External clinical experiences also allow a wide variety of patient treatment. Graduates of the program are well prepared to successfully complete the National Dental Hygiene Board and the Western Regional Board Examination, and the Texas Jurisprudence Examination for licensure.

Upon successful completion of these examinations, the graduate is eligible for state licensure. Upon receipt of state licensure, the Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) may provide educational, clinical, and therapeutic services.

Dental Hygienists are in demand here in the Rio Grande Valley and throughout the nation. Most graduates receive placement immediately upon receiving licensure, and the pay for a entry-level hygienist is $180-200 per day in this area.

What do I need to apply?

Students wishing to apply to the dental hygiene program must first receive general admission acceptance from TSTC by applying at the Admissions Office and successfully passing the THEA or Accuplacer test.  At least 30 students are accepted into the Dental Hygiene program each year, and acceptance is primarily based upon scores received on the Health Occupation Basic Entrance Test, which is offered at the Counseling Center from January  5, 2009 until January 30, 2009. Students must schedule a test date by calling (956)364-4310. Other factors are also considered, and each prospective candidate should contact the program chair (956) 364-4697 to ensure proper application procedures. The dental hygiene program is located in the Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. Health Science Technology Building.
