Dental Hygiene

The Dental Hygiene Program at Texas State Technical College  is fully accredited by the American Dental Association Joint Commission on Accreditation.

A dental hygienist is a preventive oral health professional licensed in dental hygiene who provides educational, clinical and therapeutic services supporting health through the promotion of oral health.

A dental hygienist is the member of the dental health team responsible for providing treatment that helps prevent oral disease such as dental caries (cavities) and periodontal disease (gum disease) and for educating the patient on the maintenance of optimal oral health. This professional is especially knowledgeable about the preventive aspects of dental disease.

Most dental hygienists practice in private dental offices, but
other employment opportunities include federal, state, and local health departments, hospitals and nursing homes, school districts and other educational settings, correctional facilities and Health Maintenance Organizations.
