Scholarships - Top 10 Tips for Successful Scholarship Applications

1. Apply for anything and everything for which you think you might be eligible.

2. Complete the Application in full—note that if something isn’t applicable on the application, don’t leave it blank.

3. Follow Directions—Don’t supply things not requested (i.e., transcripts, resumes, etc.).

4. Neatness Counts—make photocopies for working drafts

5. Make sure your essay makes an impression—be personal and specific. Include concrete details. (Remember the special circumstances essay is optional.)

6. Watch all deadlines—have a self-imposed deadline 2 weeks prior to actual due date. Use as proofreading time.

7. Take steps to make sure your application gets where it needs to go—make a copy of entire packet and keep for your files. Name should appear on all pages.

8. Give it a final ‘Once Over’—Proofread (and have someone else proofread) the entire application carefully.

9. Ask for help if you need it—if you need it, don’t hesitate to call the funding organization.

10. Remember, your scholarship application represents you!!
